Review on 🎨 Winsor & Newton Artist Willow Charcoal Sticks 12/Pkg: Assorted Colors by Hannah Curi

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Ideal for sketching layouts and working out details BEFORE you actually draw/paint

At first I was a little confused how to use it; I've always tried to do finished drawings and they crumble into dust that gets blown away and smeared. BUT now I know how to use them to sketch the original layout under pressed charcoal (or whatever) and the powder rubs off so easily that drawing and cleaning up is MUCH easier than with any other material. Now I use them for almost everything (charcoal portraits, conte, paintings, etc.), but only as a first step. They break very easily but are strong enough to be used as a pencil OR just a "stick". I didn't like them for a long time because they don't lend themselves to permanent drawings, but that's the whole point; You can go through the entire drawing first, erasing it in the process, and it leaves enough traces to follow. They are now part of my "process" for almost any type of artwork I can create.

Pros
  • Thin area; Average; and thick short sticks
Cons
  • Long delivery
