Worked great with the tiles!

After reading many tutorials on painting floor tiles I decided to paint over the disgusting 70's rust colored tiles in our downstairs bathroom. I knew plain white was going to be boring, so I looked everywhere for stencils. It's important to note that my tiles are 13" and without a custom (expensive) stencil it's almost impossible to find good 13" stencils. So I decided to try it with a specific pattern in mind. I used soft masking tape made for freshly painted surfaces to position the stencil and a domed stencil sponge to apply the paint. I started with full tiles and progressed to smaller tiles, gradually trimming the stencil. Some of the oddly shaped tiles in the corners required me to glue the template pieces together, but it worked fine. Since my tiles were larger than this template, I extended the lines along the edge to reach the end of my tiles so the design looks a little different than if I had the correct size tiles. Despite everything, I was happy with the look. You can see what it looked like before expanding these lines in my first picture. There was a bit of bleeding every now and then, but mostly due to my own impatience and too much paint or wiping too hard. It is also important to know that on larger projects you should try to peel/scratch off the paint, since the paint is cured on top (I've been working on this for 3 days), the design isn't that clear. I was able to scrape and remove the dried paint without too much trouble. Although it would be better if I just washed it regularly. The stencil is of good weight and very durable. It was easy to cut with a ruler and an Xacto knife.

Pros
  • Easy to use and clean
Cons
  • Damaged
