Before I bought it I used a small glass and bucket to change the water in my aquariums. It wasn't unmanageable, but it certainly took a while to bail out 3 gallons of water and I didn't clean the gravel at all. This has reduced the water change time to less than 10 minutes and cleaned gravel much better. It has a simple filter ("bait net") at the top to keep gravel, fish, plants etc from being sucked in, but some small bits of gravel will still get through. While this isn't a huge problem; The nozzle can be removed and I just pour all the gravel back into the tank. The pump works fine as long as the nozzle is up.
