Review on π Enhance Your Speaker Installation with Metra 82-6901 Universal Speaker Adaptor Plates by Kyle Pickett
I'm here to clear this up.
They are thin but strong. If they were rigid they would crack/break, which is clearly not what you want. They fit into 6x9 and 6x8 openings. You do NOT need any special tools when expanding holes like the 5.25 hole to accommodate 6.5 inch speakers. I used pliers along the groove to remove what was needed. Then I used a razor blade to remove the burrs. It was very easy, I did both parts in under 5 minutes.
