Definitely doesn't prevent escape (no harness is made for cats as they are smart) but works better than other harnesses that go around the neck and more provide security. My cat can walk in it normally. On the other hand, it's shrinking. The reason I bought this was because I often need to put my cat in a carrier (when traveling) and she doesn't like the carrier. The presence of this harness makes it much easier to prevent the cat from escaping. .
