Review on Mobius Ruppert Artists Pencil Sharpener Painting, Drawing & Art Supplies by Dawn Fischer

WARNING: The blade is above the sharpener and can cut your hand/finger if you are not careful.

Absolutely excellent pencil sharpener. It's durable, fairly easy to use, and has replaceable blades if this one gets dull. That being said, I already have a big cut on my finger from the blade protruding past the tip of the sharpener. The slat should be lower or at least flush with the wall/ceiling. If the sharp edge is higher, you risk a really nasty cut because you'll be shocked at how easily it cuts any part of your hand that touches it. I've got a few cuts now and hopefully now I'll be reminded to stop paying attention and be very careful! This is a clear design flaw that needs to be addressed. I have a round one with two holes. A hole has a blade at each end, so no matter how you hold it, if your hand is up/down it will get you. I don't think the photos show how it works very well. Basically, the smaller hole shaves the pin in one direction and the larger hole shaves the opposite end. You'll need a fairly large pencil to make this larger hole. I have a ton of crayons and they all work with the narrow end. I thought maybe one side is rougher and the smaller side is for fine tuning or lengthening the tip. It doesn't seem to be the case, each hole is designed for a specific pin size. If I ever pick up a giant pencil, I think it will come in handy! I have a KUM 2 hole sharpener which is just like the other 2 hole sharpeners listed here. I always thought KUM was very durable, I think it's a lighter silver colored metal. Blades can also be exchanged. However, this one is MUCH heavier and the blade is slightly longer. I can get a two hole side by side design (the one that looks like a no brainer!) just because I can't stop cutting myself! I have arthritis and nerve damage in my neck has caused some of my fingertips to lose feeling. With swollen joints and lack of feeling you really don't want to handle a sharp blade! I've already had surgery for another cut where I severed a nerve and artery and I have no desire to do it again. I definitely recommend this sharpener. In fact, it works better than any other sharpener, manual or electric, that I have. In order to keep the blade sharp, it is advisable to sharpen the graphite pencil from time to time. I bought some new ones, they're not expensive and I'll let you know if I think it will help. I also replaced the blades with a spare I bought just to see if another blade could come close. This didn't happen so I sent the original blade back as it is very sharp. You will need a small Phillips screwdriver to replace the blade. Be careful where you do it. The screw is small, like the ones in your glasses, and if you drop it you might spend quite a while looking for it. I would recommend them, but I would recommend that you go for a style other than round with two holes.
