Review on πŸ”‘ Perixx PERIBOARD-106 US W: High Performance Wired Keyboard with 20 Million Key Press Life - Full Size 17.9"x6.6"x1.7" - White by Reginald Hamilton

Keyboard with middle membrane switch; soft space bar (can be fixed)

Overall 3 stars. A combination of average and above average, but there's one big problem (see below). Definitely better than Dell's obnoxious replacement desktop giveaway, but doesn't replace a Switch-based mechanical keyboard. Pros and cons: - Fairly solid body that doesn't flex - Classic ANSI layout with no weird key shapes - Uninspiring weight in hand but stays in place well once it's on the desk - 3-position cable storage - nice touch - fairly muted not-too-loud feedback clicks - decent typing feel for all alphanumeric keys; above average travel for budget membrane switches. The key response is ok for everyday use, but too slow for hard ten-finger typing and gaming. The biggest downside is that the spacebar (one) is too soft. Spacebar because no other key was as soft. I used a ring cap remover to loosen the spacebar and have a look. Clearly the problem was that the stabilizer wire was over-smeared with excessively viscous grease at both ends. I removed everything with cotton swabs and then reinserted the key to test the change; it didn't feel smooth anymore, but now it was making too much rattling noise, so it definitely needs some lubrication, but not as much as originally applied. I searched my bathroom closet for an oil-based moisturizer (yes, I know it evaporates over time) that's less viscous than the original lube, and applied it. Bingo. Now it is no longer soft; with more click noise but also more tactile and in line with other stabilized buttons. Good enough to keep the keyboard, but Perixx needs to change the lube and improve quality control.
