Your smartphone can become even smarter!

That's very cool. It turns my iPhone 6+ into a scientific instrument with a free app. My phone is in a waterproof Otter Box so I had to use it with a headphone jack adapter cable, but it worked fine once I installed everything securely. The app allows you to take temperature and humidity readings, record them with a photo of the location being tested along with geographic coordinates, date and time, and more. I'm still figuring everything out, but so far everything is working as advertised. I don't have a serious need for this kind of information, but I see the potential. I intend to show this to the security officer at my workplace; We have incubators, cold rooms, laboratory instruments etc. and it is of great interest to be able to document the environmental conditions around the building. If I worked in the insurance industry and assessed flood damage or inspected buildings, I could imagine where that would be. really helpful. For example, you can measure exactly how wet the basement was. Or you can use it for your own weather monitoring. If you are a pilot, knowing the temperature and dew point at your location is important for flight planning. That's about the size and weight of a flash drive, so it should be easy to pack in your flight bag. I don't know if it works with an iPad - it's worth downloading the free app to see if it works and playing in the simulation before buying the device. If you already plan flights and store navigation charts on your iPad, it makes sense to add this. It's ingenious how Extech was able to use the processing power of a smartphone and existing hardware to add new features with a well-designed sensor package. Plug and Play - Uses your phone's own power supply to operate, so you don't have to worry about batteries or power adapters. If this continues, we should see add-ons that turn smartphones into the equivalent of a Star Trek tricorder pretty soon. It's like the first iteration of a software application, a bit crude but useful. It should only improve with customer feedback and field experience.
