Nice car, bad mechanics

Hello! My father recently passed away and I inherited his record collection. The reason I was interested in the Victrola brand was because there was also an original model of an antique Victrola (with a handle, not a fork!) but it was too big to bring into my college apartment . I've also recently wanted to upgrade my tiny waterproof Bluetooth speaker to something more substantial, so I ordered this one. In general, I was treated well, but I had a few questions. Getting down to looks: 4/5 This is a beautiful car! I got mine in espresso to match my furniture and couldn't be happier with the handles, lights or display. From the outside everything looks very clean and high quality if you don't look too closely. The mechanics inside (the knobs and switches for the vinyl) are plastic and look a bit cheap. In addition, the wood is just the skin, and beneath the plastic faux grain is a lightweight wood composite. I was a little upset when I opened the box, but overall not bad! Sound: 4/5 Whether vinyl or something else, the speakers produce warm, rich highs and powerful bass. As an R&B fan, I was a bit disappointed. However, the speakers have a lot of volume. The sound this machine makes fills my apartment at a quarter volume, which is very impressive for the size. The bass problem could easily be solved by purchasing a set of bookshelf speakers which I could make when I move to a larger location. Mechanics: 3/5 Earlier I mentioned the fact that the mechanics in the car look cheap. At first the machine worked like a dream and played all my dad's old records as well as I remembered them. After using it daily for a couple of weeks, I bought some new records. When I played the new one my hand started jumping after a few seconds! I had no idea what was going on, but after some googling I found that the lever needs to be balanced (set a heavier weight so the needle sits in the grooves and doesn't jump), but this machine doesn't work. Do not allow the player to balance the tone arm. After Googling a little further, I found that many audiophiles classify the Victrola as a Crosley for poor quality and cheap mechanics. Frustrated that I'd spent so much money on an inferior turntable and already thrown out the box and receipts, I did what any poor college student would do: put two nickels in my hand. He played the new record like a dream! In the end I wrapped the nickels with black tape so they don't stick out against the background of other parts. I'm still very sad that I spent so much money to have such a major design flaw, but luckily it was a quick and easy fix. Overall I am very satisfied with this product. I like the way it looks and I like listening to my dad's old records. I wish I had done more research instead of just buying something that looked cool and shiny, but that's what I get for hopping on the vinyl bandwagon at the last minute. OVERALL: If you're young and stingy and need a turntable (and have a few nickels handy), buy this! If you're an experienced audiophile, keep looking.

Pros
  • Great design
Cons
  • Crumpled packaging

It's pretty cool - but it works way better after I upgraded the head and needle
