I use these for heating in the microwave. I got rid of plastic storage years ago and have always avoided using any kind of plastic for the microwave - I even take frozen food out of the packaging at the store and place it in a glass jar before microwave. I don't want to use stoneware either, as the water vapor will eventually penetrate the microscopic cracks that form in the glaze over time and ruin my good crockery. About 4 years ago I bought a set of 8 square plates from IKEA to put in the oven and microwave. I love them - they're 6 inches long on each side, about 2 inches deep, and perfect for microwave portions. For a while I had a set of square, almost flat Libby plates that fit snugly on top like a lid to retain heat, but gradually they began to crack if placed directly on the counter after they were done were put in the microwave (I also suspect my husband and family he uses plates to eat because he cuts meat like he's trying to cut a plate). I have found that they can be used in place of lids and I really like them. They're not flat - they're somewhere between a flat bowl and a plate. The raised sides make them the perfect lids because they hold square utensils with no gaps. They are very durable and also make great plates to eat with. If I need a plate instead of a bowl, I just use one with the other on top as a lid and heat it up. They're the perfect size for small meals and snacks, as well as for covering. I completely sold them out and only bought 2 more sets of 3 to make sure I have enough for the inevitable meltdown that is just a side effect of living in a house with a constantly distracted husband. I see many uses for these cymbals and love their unusual shape. I sincerely recommend them.
