I tried this fan and worked 72 hours to give it a break in period. Lasko, Proctor Silex and others, including some generics. This fan is great except for one annoying issue: the sound. Note that I don't mean volume; I mean noises like noises. It's not loud. The fan motors I've had before mostly made a low hum - some louder than others but always bearable. I bought this fan and was blown away by the variable speed and power delivery, but was so disappointed with the sound - even more so for its great performance. The tone is high. Not as high as tinnitus, but definitely an eye catcher. I couldn't just turn it on, hear the sound and finally forget it was in the room. I'm having a hard time thinking of a sound to compare it to other than a howl. It definitely erases any white noise (which, if it existed, was imperceptible). The sound of this fan is best compared to colour: certain colors - black, grey, brown, forest green - are muted and blend in with most environments, while red, yellow, orange and neon draw attention. If that fan was a color, it would be orange (although that wouldn't prevent accidental shooting, lol). If it were a scent, it would be unripe grapefruit. Hope that helps.
