I am very happy with the Linksys WMP11 PCI Wireless Network Adapter. It has a real real antenna that sticks out from the back of the PC and can be adjusted for optimal signal strength. The only problem I had was the Windows XP wireless network setup utility competing against the utility that came with the card. I suppose I could have let windows utility manage the card, but I ended up unchecking the box that allowed the card to be managed. This allowed me to use the Linksys utility to set it up and everything has been running smoothly ever since. Signal strength is excellent - much better than the SMC PCI card I've used before. I don't know if this was due to the existing antenna and not the overhang of the rear plastic SMC board in the form of a PC card. I would like more detailed instructions from Linksys on how to install these cards in Windows XP, but I have no complaints about the card itself.
