There are many rumors that this CPU needs water cooling, so I tested it. Mine easily and consistently overclocks to 4.0GHz with a single-fan Noctua NH-U14S TR4-SP3. Perhaps the frequency can be a little higher with liquid cooling, but I haven't tried it, although there's plenty of thermal latitude. My processor noctua runs only 2 degrees hotter than h115i. This processor also works well with high-speed RAM. Just make sure you get an Asus motherboard if you want to hit 3600MHz at 128GB. I tested 3600MHz at 64GB with Zenith Extreme and it works, but I chose the Asrock x399 Fatal1ty Professional Gaming for size reasons and my GPU didn't fit in the first Zenith Extreme slot. Asus boards have many other advantages, but the Fatal1ty board has some unique advantages such as: B. Built-in 10G LAN, for what it's worth. So with the Asrock board I was able to run 3200MHz on 64GB. It doesn't say in the manual or anywhere that the board doesn't support 3600MHz, but if you choose 3733MHz it will revert to 2166 when Windows boots. And when I chose 3600MHz it loaded and worked with that number but crashed as soon as I started a program like Google Chrome. I tried lower and lower frequencies until I got to 3200MHz which is rock solid so I suspect it's just a known limit but Asrock support doesn't know about it. So yes, Threadripper is an amazing processor, but there are some things you should plan ahead for your system. By the way, if you want to boot from an NVMe RAID array, this is definitely the right platform. The setup isn't trivial, but that's from Intel VROC, so here we go.
