Review on 🌩️ Intermatic AG3000 HVAC Surge Protective Device - Universal 120/240 VAC, Color by Jason Ortiz

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Easy to install and probably worth it.

The Intermatic AG3000 is a good surge protector for an outdoor HVAC unit (compressor, condenser, fan). It can be installed as a Type 1 or Type 2 SPD. I installed it in the recess at the bottom of the line-side external AC breaker. The installation is very easy. There are two black wires and one white wire. The black wires connect to each of the two 120V legs in the circuit breaker. The white wire is connected to the ground bar in the circuit breaker. The Romex wire that ran from the main panel to my AC disconnect switch had black and white wires each used for a 120V branch, with a bare copper wire connected to the ground rail. While black/white means hot/neutral for single phase 120V circuits, don't let that put you off. Each of the AG3000's black wires is connected to a 120V leg and the white wire is connected to the ground rail. Another thing to watch out for is the length of the cord. The AG3000's pre-stripped wires are 18 inches long; It is recommended that the leads to the SPD be kept as short as possible, if the installation allows, they should be cut shorter. The AG3000 is one of the best SPDs available for HVAC systems - the clamping voltage on each leg is 600V (ie line to neutral/earth) and the clamping voltage between the two legs is 900V (ie line to line). . The maximum surge current is 100 kA. And the fact that the preliminary data using 10 gauge wire is reassuring. Note that this device is also available from Revain under a different name - the MARS 83900 HVAC Surge Protector. Before you buy, compare the prices of two devices - sometimes one is cheaper, sometimes the other.
