Review on KEF Standmound Speakers Gloss Black by Rafael Gomez

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Loud, clean, amazing sounding bookshelves that look like towers

I'm writing this in part because the 'boring boy' review didn't let me try these speakers. His opinion differs greatly from reputable sites like "whathifi" (they gave it a 5 out of 5 and called it unbeatable in the price range and I agree). This is a bookshelf speaker that literally sounds as loud as a floorstanding speaker. When choosing the right speaker I looked at black and white 606s2, 706s2, Fyne F500 and rw 51m clips. Fyne had amazing 3D but they cut off my ears. Both Bowers and Wilkins were very picky on the high end, but to be honest they sounded "harsh" and lacked appeal. The B@W had a metallic aftertaste and we found the 606s2 sounded better than the 706 despite being half the price. The KEF R3s are amazing at low and mid frequencies but not so good at high frequencies. Far from confusing, they're still very clear, but they're not as resolving as the black-and-white lines. They are also very pleasant to listen to, my ears don't get tired of them like others. I run them with a NAIM uniti Atom which handles these beauties well despite only putting out 40 watts per channel. These speakers also sound great at low and high volumes. I definitely didn't just research online, but listened to all of the ones mentioned at home before settling on them. They sound much better to my ears and I've only had them one day. My girlfriend breathes a sigh of relief because we've been going through all these columns and my ongoing research for the past three weeks! I liked them for watching movies and listening to different music, and they work great with hi-fi apps like Tidal and Qobuzz. Watch what your ears say and don't listen to me! Check out these speakers and see if they're right for you. The only thing that bothers them is their size, they are very large bookshelf speakers. To be honest, it looks like they cut off the top of the floorstanding speaker and dropped the cabinet. They're beautiful and do a good job of feeling unassuming because they're so big, but you're going to need space. Thank goodness for them, I can finally stop researching and just start listening.

Pros
  • Enjoyable
Cons
  • Legacy model

All engineering and no music makes KEF a dull boy.
