First, the GE JAN 5654W sounds fantastic with a Riverstone audio system—a tried and true pair of vacuum tubes. After reading the reviews I immediately ordered it. When I tried the tubes they sounded like the EQ was maxed out and distorted. Once the new lamps were put in, it sounded amazing. The device itself is reliable. The tubes that come with it fit perfectly, the replacement tubes fit just right, but it's worth it. There is no hum or extra noise. The blue LED wasn't as bright with the replaced bulbs, but I don't mind that. It comes with a short 3.5mm to RCA cable for the front AUX input. There was no cinch to RCA cable or ground wire included. push-type ground terminal; I'm using a flat cable connector, so it only goes one way (didn't think to unscrew it just now, so I'll check later, but it's working fine for now). It was very well packed in foam. Long story. I typically use a Fluance RT82 turntable through the phono stage of a Yamaha R-N803 stereo receiver and Paradigm Reference Studio 80 speakers. This setup sounds great, but as I have people temporarily living in the area I'm set up in, I had to move to a new room. Now it's RT82 through that preamp, to the Pioneer VSX-919AH receiver's AUX input, and then to either Jamo Magic 6 bookshelf speakers or Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro 80 ohm headphones. RT82 turntable and DT770 headphones. I also have a constant high pitched tone in my head that was given to me.) Before I got the R-N803 I used a Pioneer receiver with a Pyle P999 phono stage and then replaced it with the ART DJPREII (returned), but the Receiver just couldn't work with the Paradigm speakers. Pyle sounded ok, DJ PREII was a little better but R-N803 was the best combo. I don't use the built-in equalizer or other sound presets. The Pioneer receiver didn't like this preamp set to 45dB because the OVER input loss indicator on the receiver's display flashed a few times with both standard tubes and standard tubes. new tubes. In any case, the 42 dB and 39 dB settings sounded better. I would definitely try this preamp with the R-N803 setup, because with Pioneer it doesn't get too bass-heavy and doesn't bleed in the ears. Precisely. The sound is very even. Didn't try the front AUX input so just played vinyl. I played The La's, Suede (RSD version), Inxs - Kick (45 1/2 speed), Beach Boys - Pet Sounds (mono) and Fleetwood Mac - Rumors (rmstr). They all sounded so good. Pros: Cheap, small, decent looks, no noise, comes with 3.5mm RCA for front AUX input, sounds great with better tubes. with cinch-cinch cable. I've only used Pyle and ART as external preamps so far and would recommend this one, but only if you're willing to spend a bit more on better tubes. If there are any problems, I will update my review. .
