Review on 🔧 Dorman 603-351 Front Engine Coolant Reservoir: A Perfect Fit for BMW Models by Noah Smith

Design flaws must be modified to be usable. Still, I'm not sure about the quality of the part.

This part is cheap in quality and price. That's about half the money for the same branded part at local auto parts stores, which is good. However, this part has a design flaw and requires modification to use it, which is bad. The lower hose connection has six (three on each side) stiffening ribs which should only be in the upper hose attachment ring but unfortunately go through both the top and bottom. These ribs prevent the wire tie on the coolant hose from entering the slot. I took my dremel and just carved 3 ribs into the bottom ring and then the hose snapped into place. Also the upper hoses don't fit as tight as I would like. Right now I'm holding on because I had no choice. If I had more time and seen it sooner, Bavarian Auto has a Behr tank (part number: 376789731) for $46 without the lid and you pay the same price for shipping. The cap is another $20 or use your old cap. If you're using your old cap, replace the o-rings and you'll be fine.

Pros
  • Direct replacement - this engine coolant tank is the same size and function as the original part
Cons
  • Definitely bad product
