Review on πŸ“€ Panasonic DVD-S27S Silver Progressive Scan DVD Player: High-Quality Viewing Experience by Hassan Barrera

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great for the price; There's no better picture if you don't spend much more

This is an amazing DVD player for the price. Features include excellent progressive output quality, playback of all recordable DVD formats (DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW, DVD-RW VR mode (random access mode used for some standalone DVD recorders like Sony) and DVDs ). RAM (a random access mode used for some standalone recorders such as Panasonic) and one-touch automatic audio and video settings that can be used to "optimize" the output for a specific disc type. The picture quality, especially in progressive scan mode (output via the component output connectors), is significantly better than the picture from "cheap" players in the same mode. The difference is that Panasonic uses a proprietary high quality video decoder chip. It has the standard component width, but is only about 2 inches tall and unusually short front-to-back. This can be both a plus and a minus, depending on where you plan to place it. for example, under a modest-sized TV. Other nice touches include a good-sized LCD (many low-end players skimp on the display these days or forgo it altogether) and a decently ergonomic remote control. The main disadvantages of this player are: 1) it only has a coaxial digital jack on the back, there is no optical jack; 2) new hybrid audio/video formats such as DVD-A or SACD will not play; and 3) as mentioned above, it's fairly flat, which means that if it's going to be placed on the component stack, it should be the top component. It also cannot be used as a TV stand. You could spend more on a DVD player, but unless you're spending multiple times the price of this unit unless you need to play a DVD-A or SACD, you won't find another player with a better picture.
