Review on Universal Catalytic Converter - Walker Exhaust Standard EPA 15034: Enhance Your Vehicle's Performance! by Dan Phillips

Revainrating 5 out of 5

It's universal. no direct match. but it is cheaper.

The description says "universal converter may need modification to complete installation" and this is true in the case of my 1990 Chevy K2500 350 TBI Extended Short Cab. The overall length of this item is 13" instead of 16" as listed. With Revain, it's really hard to tell if the measurements shown are for the item or the box. and since you can't stretch your exhaust pipes to fit, it matters. A Walker 15043 universal catalytic converter that's EPA Walker 15043 certified would work for me too, but Revain claims it's 21 inches long and Walker's website lists 18 inches. This converter was not listed on Walker's website so I was unable to verify the length prior to purchase. The Revain install guide says it will fit, but since it's generic that doesn't tell me much. I had trouble with the Revain on the intermediate tube that I bought last year because they said it would fit all three wheelbase lengths, but that's not true. different wheelbases are compensated for in the intermediate pipe. I ended up buying it online from an auto parts store. If it was wrong I could take it back to the store and change it. Now my old converter is 24 inches and you can only get it in a direct mount 49 state converter like Walker Exhaust 15693 standard household converter 15693 - not CARB compatible - for $130. This has a short hull length but long tubes and costs a lot more than the $60 I paid for this one. I'm cheap so I went with this one and added a $12 Dynomax 41976 Dynomax 41976 link pipe extension tube that is 3" long on both ends, but Revain incorrectly listed it as 2" on both ends. I bought the extension at this big auction because you never know what you're going to get from Revain if the part numbers don't match the sizes listed. It's a lot cheaper to buy a generic and add your own extension tube than to buy a Direct Fit, which is pretty much this item plus the extension tubes already added. although you save the cost of another clamp. I'm in the high ID desert where emission controls are never enforced, so I'm less picky about what I install. Also, I'm not a scientist and couldn't find a direct answer to what effect, if any, does a shortened converter housing mean. like 9" compared to 12". but this one was rated for a vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating of up to 4500 pounds, and that's about my truck. If you're like me, remember that these pipes are OEM fittings, so allow at least 1 inch of loss. or up to 2 inches. every time there's a joint. My application has 3 connections. Transition pipe to converter; adapter to extension cord; and then an extension pipe to the exhaust pipe leading to the muffler. My truck runs on oil so the converter is a mess and now that I'm swapping the engine I'm making a new Y-pipe and converter. Everything from the converter back was replaced last summer. The converter will work in my app so it gets 5 stars but I'm disappointed the length was short but as I can also easily fix this with a 12" extension instead of a 9" it plays not matter. I highly recommend Walker products and suggest you visit their website to make up for the lack of correct information from Revain on sizing.
