The back of the easel is held down with rope and works well, but if the knot is not tied in the right place the back leg will protrude through the flat part of the front and leave a dent in the canvas. I managed to tie the knot in the right place so it wouldn't stick out, but I didn't even think about it until I saw something dent the canvas. To keep it from sticking out, the stand needs to be fairly vertical. I tied the left one (in picture 2) tighter with a rope so that it doesn't stick out.
