Simply slide around the filter until you can rotate the filter by hand.

Sounded good. I assume it was metal? Well, it's so poorly made that it just slides over the ridges of the filter. You probably want one that also captures the filter's tabs. Even after I loosened the torque on the filter, it just kept sliding until it was loose enough to be turned by hand. It was an OEM Toyota Prius filter so I thought it should work but it doesn't. Returned.
