Review on Turtle Beach Elite Tactical Audio Controller by Erin Romero

Good mixamp alternative

Having both a PS4 and an Xbox One I decided to look for an alternative to the Astro Mixamp TR as I didn't want to buy one of each as the newer TR -Models are console specific. The Turtle Beach Tac is $150, which is only $20 more than the Astro Mixamp, but will work with either. I know that if you're using a console it wasn't designed for, you can actually use the Mixamp TR on either console if you put it in PC mode. I tried it and the audio works fine but the chat doesn't. On the other hand, tac works great for game audio and chat. Of course, you need to connect a 3.5mm cable to chat on Xbox One, but this cable is included in the package. After tests with my current Mixamp TR, I found that the Tac sounds a little better and has a better positional sound. In Sagittarius, you can see shots and footsteps better. But it is true that the mixamp is louder, since my mixamp is usually set to 50% volume, and tac to about 60-65% for comparison. I really like the rear small features on the Tac as they come in handy when playing in low light. Also, having all the chat features right at your fingertips with sliders is a great feature. To make any adjustments to the Mixamp, you need to go into the Astro Command Center on your computer, which I feel is just an unnecessary extra step. If you have a higher impedance audiophile headset, you might want to consider using a mixamp instead due to the lower output. I switch between my Philips Fidelio X2 and Audio Technica AD700X headphones under 30 and 38 ohms respectively and tac handles them perfectly. A great alternative to the Mixamp in my opinion, but not at its typical $199 price point.
