Good for rearing monarch butterflies but lacking in design

I use this product to rear monarch caterpillars from third instar to pupa and shell stages. It's very easy to clean, especially if you put a piece of paper towel on the bottom. My complaint is that it's difficult to remove the entire cover. If you open the right and left sides of the "latch" (it's not really a latch, it's a snap thingy) it won't open and you have to open each of the four corners. If you try to snap off the corners, the main "latch" that I've already unhooked will reattach. It is difficult to remove the lid without completely disturbing the creatures living inside. I have to put the device on the floor, clamp the cage between my legs, squeeze on both sides and bend down to open all six latches. For what I do, feeding the caterpillars once or twice a day and changing the cage daily, I can't just use the little window upstairs. Also, the window at the top is difficult to close for easy access. At first I didn't notice that it wasn't completely locked. I had a caterpillar shoot, then I realized. You have to press firmly to make a loud click for it to close completely (not actually closed at the first minor click). The device is made of very light plastic and my cat managed to stand on the table and knock it over. without much effort. Now I have to add weights to all four corners to scare away my curious cat. This is suitable for growing Monarch caterpillars but it is a very cheap design and not very well made and I find it very overpriced for what it is.

  • Very impressive
Cons
  • Not the best
