YO-290P - My first PDA

I have had a Sharp YO-290P for a few days (April 2003). I'm new to the PDA world so I don't even know if I'll find the PDA useful. I'm also one of the most frugal people I know, which led me to 290P. I don't need to download email, take photos, or replace a computer. I just wanted Instant On, a good extension for my computer that would allow me to search for contacts and tasks and take quick notes. I'm a database programmer with my own contacts database and also a contacts database in Outlook. I wrote my own program to combine this information and load it into the software provided for download. The size is amazing and it's pretty durable. The display has an excellent contrast even in the sun. The case perfectly protects the screen from scratches. When you look at this thing, you might think it's worth [$$$] or even [$$$]. It has "Up, Down, Left and Right" buttons on the touch screen as well as physical buttons on the device. Unfortunately, it only has physical "previous" and "next" buttons on the bottom of the device, not on the touchscreen. If you're holding a pen and need to "next," you'll need to move your hand to press the button. No big deal. The guide is fairly complete, but doesn't use on-screen icons for basic tasks, which is a bit confusing at first. My two main arguments: The software that comes with the product is minimalistic. Only one section can be uploaded or downloaded at a time. Download contacts, then download tasks, then download notes; Each has its own sequence in which you press PC and then select the PC link function on the device. Boring. The data is also not merged. When batch uploading, the target will be overwritten. This applies to PC download and 290P download. I was hoping for something smarter. Other than that, I loaded about 250 contacts and a few cases and am only using 66% of the memory. I've been looking for the best software. I downloaded and tried the XLink/Win shareware, but to no avail. Sharp clearly has a new communications paradigm that is incompatible with other models. Alternative suggestions for communication? If I could get it to work, the software would cost [$$$], [$$$] more than the YO-290P. 290P is very much. Not ideal, but beneficial.

Pros
  • Great design
Cons
  • Clarity
