This is normal and if they are covered with a little seaweed, most people believe they are fake. I use them to mask my overflows in a 150 gallon Revain tank. I didn't use the base that came with it as it holds it together in my situation. I also rearranged them for the same reason. However, I have bought it before. about 10 years ago and they were of much better quality. Thicker and stronger. The sections do not come close together and can very easily come loose when disturbed compared to the old set. Still good but I doubt they will last that long.
