To use this optional accessory, you must use the original Apple TV remote to go to Settings > Learn Remote. If you lost your original remote and are using it because you are trying to replace your original Apple TV remote (due to cost), this is NOT your product. You need an original Apple TV remote — you must buy one from the Apple Store — to access your Apple TV and go to Settings > Learn Remote. This will NOT work if you insert the battery and press any button - there will be no syncing - the Apple TV needs to 'learn' this aftermarket remote. This is your product, say, if you have an original Apple TV remote control, ie. You have two or three Apple TVs and are using this remote because you only lost one remote, this works by going to Settings > Learn Remote. Again, this remote will ONLY work if you can go to Settings > Remote Learn. I learned this the hard way. I bought this remote thinking it would replace the original Apple TV remote that I lost. It didn't happen because I couldn't go to Settings > Distance Learning. I had to buy an original Apple TV remote from the Apple Store. Wow, as soon as I go to Settings > Study Remote everything works great. Keep in mind.
