I did some safety checks before connecting. Look for a video called 858D Hot Air Repair Station Safety Check for some tips. This model isn't quite the same as in this video, as it has a detachable power cord and handle cord, but it should give you an idea of what to look out for. In my case the polarity was correct internally. , and an initial ground check showed that all sides of the case and the exposed metal of the connector were grounded, but after I opened it up only the back plate was grounded. I think there was a slight connection of the back plate to the other plates by one of the screws. To fix this I crimped some ring connectors onto a piece of wire and connected it from the ground pin on the back to one of the screws holding the side/top of the case to the bottom. (One of them had a nut, which I believe was there because the threads in the bottom panel were stripped.) When I checked the wiring of the included power cord, the hot and neutral wires were reversed. I replaced it with another cable I had laying around. A note: when the switch is on, one of the pins on the plug that goes to the handle is connected to the hot AC line, even when the heating element is off. (I'm assuming they switch the neutral.) This connector also has a ground pin. Therefore, if you pull off the handle and touch the contacts while the power is on, you could injure yourself. I don't intend to nudge these contacts when the device is on, so it doesn't bother me. work well enough. Heats up quite quickly, cools down a little more slowly when you put it back in the cradle. The air speed range seems reasonable to me, but this is my first experience with a hot air repair tool.
