This is a good compound for preliminary oxidation tests of other chemical compounds. Sodium iodide solution, when soaked in starch-containing paper and dried, is then exposed to an oxidizing chemical: free iodine is liberated, which reacts with the starch in the paper to produce a blue color, indicating an oxidation reaction. Hydrogen peroxide and chlorine gas cause such a reaction with NaI-impregnated starch paper.
