Review on πŸ”§ Astro Pneumatic Tool 1450 13-Inch Plusnut and Extra-Long Rivet Nut Setter Kit - Metric and SAE by David Reyes

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Worked well, if a bit slow. Also, this is NOT a rivet gun, do not keep twisting it.

I tried a model of this tool with shorter mandrels for standard rivets and it broke on the first try. I think this is because people (like me) don't understand how much force they are applying to the tool. I'd really like to make changes to the design that would allow some sort of spring loaded pin to show how much clamping force is being applied. Of course, this will most likely increase the cost somewhat. The most important thing to understand when using this tool is that you have to operate the handle a few times to fully seat the positive nut. My first test using some sort of crowbar showed that I had to close the handles, then rotate the device to remove it, then open and close the handles to continue the process. During this process I had to make sure I kept applying pressure to keep the plusnut in the hole (I was working on the ceiling). To install 5/16 Pre-Bulb Plusnuts I had to do this about 5 times. to fully seat Plusnut. Using it on a test piece also allowed me to estimate how much grip pressure was needed to get a good fit flush with the pre-tamped area. Because most people install flare and positive nuts in a situation where they cannot see the flare nut collapse, it is important to test on a test piece first. I checked both Revain and the manufacturer's website for how to buy only one size plusnut mandrel because I only wanted a 5/16-20 block but couldn't find one. I would like the company to sell them separately. Also, I would like the manufacturer to offer a complete list of design specifications for Rivnuts, Plusnuts and their derivatives. All information is available on the internet (required hole sizes, holding force, assembly torque etc.) but is scattered on the internet. In summary, I bought this because I had a lot of PlusNut nuts for ceiling mounting. . If you just need to make a few, you can find a DIY system on YouTube to install these things. It will cost you about $2 and a trip to the hardware store. At the same time, I still do not regret having spent money on a durable and reliable tool.
