Review on Unleash Nostalgia with Pac Man Connect Play Classic Games: Experience Classic Arcade Action! by Satish Greener

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Works well but difficult to use

I got the 5-in-1 Jakks Plug and Play Ms Pac-Man (is it selling insanely over $150 now?) when it went to came out for the first time, mainly for Galaga. With age and new technologies, that no longer works. I've seen this work well on newer widescreen TVs so I decided to buy it. It contains seven other games, which is good, but I'm only going to play Galaga. And possibly Galaxian since he is there. Connection is via the same RCA component jacks, one for video and one for audio, but in widescreen mode. Instead of seeing dots etc at the top, they are on the side of the screen. And it looks really good on the newer screens, especially compared to the old one's standard resolution. Plays very well. At least for Galaga. While I still disagree with the Galaga, it's definitely better than the 5-in-1 simply because the fire button is on the right side of the joystick. I tried Pacman and like the old one, the joystick doesn't work very well for it. It's fine, but I think anyone who's really into Pacman won't be too pleased if the yellow dude doesn't have their way. The same goes for dig dud and rally x. The rest of the games seem to work. On the Galaga, I don't notice any button lag when firing, and the joystick moves well for that, but it only needs to move left and right. I've had two problems with it so far. The first complaint seems to be the most common; This thing absolutely sucks to hold while playing. Yes, it was supposed to be a pixelated Pac-Man and it looks neat, but apparently that's all they had in mind when designing it. The sharp edges and corners make it more suitable as a weapon than as a game controller. It's good plastic and construction, just a terrible end result with design. I had to wrap it in a towel and hold it between my thighs while I played. It's not a deal-killer, but as it is, it's really awkward to hold and use. Another problem I have and others may not have is that pressing A + B to return to the main menu does nothing for me. It doesn't really matter to me because I really only play Galaga, so I don't "need" to go back to the main menu. I think turning it off and on again is enough. Anyway, other than the two things I can handle, I'm very happy with it - simply because I can play Galaga and it only costs me $20!

Pros
  • Great overall performance
Cons
  • Frequency
