I ended up taking it apart to see what was wrong. This cable is NOT properly shielded allowing you to pick up all types of electrical interference from your computer or surrounding devices (anything with a fan or display). It's also listed in the description, but it's a MONO cable, although 1/8" is TRS. Since it's stereo, not mono, it's easy to forget when you're busy. It also means that the cable is not symmetrical, which also introduces noise Better with something else, really balanced and protected from external influences.
