I purchased #8 1/2" and #8 3/4" barrels for a 59 gallon oak wine barrel that I have converted into a kennel. I used screws to attach metal straps around the barrel to each wooden board. I drilled holes in the metal strips but didn't make pilot holes in the wood. Screws of both lengths can be easily screwed into oak wood. I hand tightened each screw, using enough force to securely fasten the metal straps and not a single screw head came loose. I actually removed a few screws and put them back in and they held up well. I live in Northern California and so far the kennel has only been exposed to morning fog/condensation for a few days. The unpainted threads of the tubes I used for the kennel's legs have rust in places, but none of the screw heads show any sign of rust. I specifically chose these stainless steel screws because I like the clean look without the screwdriver slot in the head, and also for their rust resistance because I like the look of natural, unpainted screw heads. I would rather not paint them unless absolutely necessary. We have to see how they deal with our rainy winter (if we have rain this year). So far I'm very pleased and have purchased another #8 3/4" screws for a wine barrel table with a glass top that I'm making.
