I wish I had replaced my old iron long ago because this iron is fantastic! (I had no idea what I was missing!). My old iron was the typical shiny silver. This is ceramic. This is 1/4 inch which is thinner than my previous iron (1/2 inch). Of course I can make curls tighter, but I can also control the tightness by using them. I use two methods: the first is to simply twist the hair around the flat iron with your fingers (this creates a spiral rather than a curl). Another option is to pinch the hair with a clip - I cut it in the middle of the hair length, then from there wrap it around the scalp, loosen the clip a little, then gently twist the entire flat iron, leaving the hair up to the endure end. This creates a nice loose, bouncy curl. The curl is set very quickly without having to hold the iron for a while. I've only used it ONCE and I've already decided to write this review because it's so awesome! Without a flat iron, I would describe my hair as "fluff". It is neither straight nor curly per se. I either have to straighten it or curl it. (Just add some info if you want to compare your hair type to mine). I used the "medium" setting (170). I hope this helps you with your purchase decision!
