These sponges start out pale beige but don't stay that way. They're holding a lot of fish. You can easily fit two of these into the filter, with some room at the top for a chemical bag. If you have a high bioload, you'll need to flush them fairly often. If you use two, wash one of them every week. So they act as a biofilter. Or, if you have another biofilter, you can flush both. Note: If your filter performance drops, it means that they are clogged with manure. It's time to take them out and wash one. AquaClear's instructions state that sponges should be replaced every three months. These sponges last much longer.
