The Marmot Slate Everyday Travel Bag is a 2lb 18L backpack designed as a vertical shoulder bag with backpack straps and padding. This is a good option if you're looking for a backpack with a slimmer profile that can still hold a laptop and has multiple accessory pockets. I wish there were a few things in terms of design and weight for its size, but this is a good option for the basic daily commuter. All of my Marmot belongings - clothes and gear - have been well preserved over the years. I think the mesh shoulder straps, padding, and coated top and bottom of this pack are a good complement for performance, as is my other gear. I was unlucky and got caught in a downpour for the first time with the Slate Everyday package. The coated flap and bottom did the trick, although I wouldn't feel falsely secure in believing that water would never get in or that the backpack was "waterproof". For example, I would be wary of the creases and angles created by the flap. The coating and fabric simply drip and repel water. (See photo). The design of the bag is an interesting choice, for better or for worse. With the exception of the external organizational pockets, it loads everything into the main compartment from the top. The main valve attaches with Velcro, which is quick and easy. But my concern is that it can stick to certain clothes and attract fluff and lint over time, making it less safe. I wish there was an extra raceway on the valve to really compress more. I found that at 18L it could carry a packable jacket but not much more. Organization options such as external and internal pockets are provided but the pen/small item area can be a little bulkier due to the narrower opening. None of the extra areas are structured, although the flap-covered exterior pocket is padded.
