Well, as the name suggests - this thing stabilizes the top of the stairs - this thing made me feel way, way better than the top of my 36 foot footer without it. The "wide" configuration provides more stability, while the "narrow" configuration provides enough clearance to work with the gutters while the ladder rests against the wall with a 12" reveal. Two things the manufacturer needs to fix: (1) The (beige) rubber feet occasionally slip off the black plastic feet and then the hard plastic top is *very* slippery making the ladder slide easily over most surfaces (which is NOT what you need) I smeared mine with silicone. I guess I only need to take them off when they break or wear out. "Plants" on 12/12 (45 degree) or less deep roofs This is solved by sawing off the corner of the aluminum bracket that the plastic leg attaches to.
