With my old device, too much dust got into the coil, which I wanted to prevent with my new device. I bought an adjustable filter from Home Depot and fitted it to my air conditioner. The "original" ECOFilter I first bought in HD required a replaceable inner liner, and being a reusable filter it catches a lot of dust. The only disadvantage of this type of filter is that you have to clean it carefully, otherwise dust will get into the internal filter and it will be difficult to remove. When I cleaned mine I had to take it apart and hit it pretty hard with a hose. About a year later I had to replace the inner layer and this replacement was purchased from Amazon. I ordered and cut it. Now I clean mine a little more often than when I bought a filter. So far it's holding up well and no complaints so far. I also use a regular pleated "pre-filter" just below.
