Review on Magewell USB Capture HDMI Gen2 - πŸŽ₯ Ultimate USB 3.0 HD Video Capture Dongle Model 32060 by Ananta Crowley

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Mid Product, Top Price

Well designed, well made and works great! This is what you need for those of you looking for a plug and play HDMI video and audio capture device (running on Windows 8.1x64Pro). It is very small and works without special drivers or software. I use it with the Livestream Studio software and it works without any problems! +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ +++++ ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Rating update May 22, 2017: I am changing my rating of this product from 5 Start using 3 and here's why: After regular use I noticed video stream loss issues. It became extremely sensitive, and the cables had to be adjusted to be at a specific angle in a specific position with the correct tension. In the end, this unit just stopped working together. Although we probably only unplugged and plugged it back in 10 times in the entire time we've had this thing, the physical USB 3.0 connector inside the device literally detached and rattled internally. Obviously, that rendered it utterly useless. I contacted Magewell support and they said they could fix the product for free (excluding shipping). They created an RMA and sent me shipping information, which I was very worried about. You found that you can't declare a fractional value greater than $10; Some of the wording said less, some said exactly $10, and overall it was very confusing. I sent the unit to the exact address provided and declared it exactly as they stated with all the documentation requested. After not hearing from them for a week or two and giving the carriers the benefit of the doubt, I started emailing regularly to ask for updates. I received a response, but it wasn't very helpful, and they often referred to their (handy) policy that the buyer takes full responsibility when shipping products to them. In general, it's been two months since it stopped working and I sent it in for repair. They no longer return status emails and I lost $300 plus shipping to China. Since its value was only $10, I can't make a claim against the carrier that would be worth my time. As a result, I not only replaced the device with something from another manufacturer, but also completely re-evaluated the product. Magewell could have been designed better with more reliable connections (especially compared to the new one I got). At the time of my initial review, this was one of the few products that could actually do what I needed, so I thought the price was reasonable. With competing devices now costing half the price (or even less), it's clear that Magewell has done nothing to stay competitive. As long as it worked, Magewell worked fine, but I'm just not going to reward a company that gave me that kind of experience with a future business. I have yet to see if the new device will fit Magewell when it was new, but since I could get two of these for the price of one, that doesn't seem like too much of a risk.
