Revainrating 5 out of 5

Our first air fryer is slick, a delight to use and easy to clean!

With all the hype about air fryers we were excited to try one out for ourselves and to see how it actually handled cooking and heating. This Kalorik Maxx 4 quart digital air fryer is on the smaller side but we were looking for something that didn't take up too much counter space. We already have a regular oven/stove top and an over the range convection microwave which are fine for most things but not always ideal to use. We rarely power up the oven and being energy conscious, this small air fryer is fast and efficient at many tasks that would otherwise require more time and prep. The air fryer is essentially a compact convection oven with a powerful fan to circulate the heat from the element around a small cooking area. The compactness of the cooking space means that more heat goes into cooking the food and less into heating up the unit or even your kitchen if you happen to peek in during cooking. As such, this unit takes almost no time to preheat and so for many food items it will save you time. The circulation of the heated air also cooks food from a little to a lot quicker. If your food items don't include air fryer cooking instructions you can generally shave off some minutes based on the oven cook times. Foods will cook in their own juices or oils but you can always brush on a little extra oil or butter if you're concerned about some foods drying out too much. In most cases, your food will turn out crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The operation of this Kalorik unit is very simple and customizing the settings couldn't be easier, even if you begin with a preset. You simply place the food in the removable basket drawer on the non-stick trivet (tray), close the drawer and either choose a preset or use the buttons and dial to select the temperature and time. That's it. If you want to check on your food while cooking, the unit automatically pauses when you open the drawer and then resumes automatically a few seconds after you close it again. You can change the time and temperature settings at any time during cooking to make adjustments as needed. When the timer reaches zero, the unit will ping and your food should be done. One of the things that we really like about this unit is that it is quick and easy to clean. The basket drawer and trivet are both non-stick so avoid using anything abrasive on them and they should last for years. The noise level from this unit is similar to a microwave but I would say a little quieter. As this is a smaller air fryer, it does have limitations on the volume of food that you can cook at once. For one or two people, this is ideal but some may prefer a 6 quart or larger if you have the counter space or more people to prepare for. The only negative observations I made were that the unit will continue to ping periodically after your food is done, even if you have removed the contents and closed the drawer. This is probably a temperature warning signal that continues until the unit has cooled. Other than unplugging the unit, if you keep the drawer slightly ajar the display lights will go out and the unit will cease pinging much quicker. Also, the unit is not super heavy so if your countertop is very slick you may have to steady the unit with one hand while opening it to prevent the whole unit from sliding with the drawer. It does have rubber feet but a non-slip or silicone pad underneath may help if you encounter this issue. These were only minor details so I will still rank this at 5 stars for its slick form and excellent function.
