Although the blades are quite sharp, there is a lot of play in the hinges which prevents the blades from staying in line when trimming thread or light fabrics. I haven't tried using it on heavier fabrics or implements, but lots of play would most likely make this impossible as the blades would separate and not shear between the blades. In particular, small cutters are utterly useless in cutting thread of any caliber when the blades separate the thread in simple folds between the blades without cutting them. Buy a reputable brand like Fisker and avoid those inferior scissors that are poorly made and manufactured.
