Review on ASUS Zephyrus Display Keyboard GX551QS XS98 by Thunder Ballman

Revainrating 4 out of 5

The best laptop I've ever used and it doesn't even come close

I really can't put into words how good this laptop is but I'll try. just wow. For starters, I gave the battery life 4 stars because this laptop uses a lot of power. I tend to think of this laptop as more of a mobile desktop than anything else. I believe it's around 3 hours of life as advertised. This thing is definitely a monster despite being connected to the network. I absolutely do not believe that so much power can be packed into such a small housing. I had an Asus Zenbook Pro Duo around this time before this last year and while I really liked this laptop it had a 4k screen with a 2060 and an i9. The 4k screen did not allow playing on it. Like the 2060, this was too weak. The additional screen was also very difficult to see on this model. It just wasn't practical and I felt like I was looking down on him and forced to step up. This model pretty much eliminated all of my ailments and did more. I was dying to try Ryzen processors as people praised them and I was not disappointed. Meanwhile, the 300Hz screen, the 3070 they put in here, and the second screen that pops up just exceeded my expectations. This laptop literally completely replaced my desktop this week after I bought it. It has so many ports that I don't even know what to do with them all. I was able to easily connect the display port cable to this laptop and can play perfectly on my monitor which I used for my desktop at 280Hz and in many games I was able to consistently get past 300fps. Overwatch I could get 400 if I set it to unlimited. As long as you're not playing triple-A games, you're going to get incredible fps with this thing. I could go on and on praising this laptop. Asus has really done something incredible. The only downsides I found are very few and not even significant. Extra screen 60Hz. I thought both were 300Hz but that's not a problem as most people will still use the extra screen for apps like Spotify or Discord. The other is subjective and that is the keyboard. It is addictive. I think the only legitimate complaint others have complained about online is that the update was quite painful and not as streamlined as advertised. The tool you need to upgrade is a Torx T5 and PH000 Philips screwdriver which I didn't mention anywhere. There are 14 screws and a Phillips head. It would be nice if that was the only part, but once you're inside, upgrading or adding an SSD becomes tricky. Several people online have mentioned how difficult it is to unscrew the screws on the laptop itself (rather than the outer panel) to insert the SSD. I literally had to use pliers to get it out as a lot of people said they would remove the screws from the inside which I almost did. Luckily after using the pliers it was easy to install the Samsung 980 SSD 2TB I bought for it. Also, it's pretty pointless to upgrade the RAM, even though it's advertised as up to 48GB, you lose dual-channel by doing so, so it's a useless upgrade. I wish Asus didn't tighten the SSD screws so tightly, but other than that, Asus has just outdone itself with this laptop. If you have the money I highly recommend buying this. Believe me you won't regret it.

Pros
  • There's something to it
Cons
  • Minor issues
