Review on ELAC Debut Bookshelf Speakers Black Home Audio by Brandon Mix

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Not an audiophile killer, outperforms other cheap speakers.

They're good for $230, not good enough for $300. The thing is, with so many terrible products available online at this price point, this is a great deal because you are guaranteed to get a quality product that looks great. You are musical. But people classify them as audiophile quality at a much lower price. So much so that I bought a pair and put them on an Audio Research preamp, a hand-made tube amp with cables that cost more than speakers. I compared them to a well known vendor Dynavox kit (which is also popular in this price range) and then to a B&W 607. They're about twice as expensive. They promise (at least in reviews) the same sound for less money. My verdict, they are not. They are the same, maybe a little better than what you would build yourself from a quality kit of parts. B&W simply wiped the floor with it, they can't be compared in any way. They're not even playing the same game. But I would like to recommend them if that is your budget limit, they are very good. If you're trying to save $300, don't. For the tech savvy, some coupling capacitors are electrolytic rather than film or metalized polymer. An unmistakable quick upgrade - although it probably had to be done at the factory. I love it and keep them for my workshop. My biggest complaint is that people say they give you $300 audiophile sound the same as $600-1500 speakers. but they just don't exist. Very happy with the product for the price, would wholeheartedly recommend with the caveats above.
