Great Controller (Warning: Common Positive)

This is my second controller of this type that has been purchased, the first one still works great after a few years. It's amazingly customizable and easy to set up with no extra maintenance. However, it is worth noting that this block has a common positive (+) contact between the input of the solar array, the battery and the output. If the battery shares ground (-) with the solar panel or output load, it will not function properly. However, I was able to use a PNP Darlington transistor (TIP125) to switch a low power load (C) from a positive load (E) with a 1K resistor from the base (B) to the negative terminal of the controller's load terminal . I left the bottom of the solar panel insulated for simplicity. A TIP125 should be able to handle a maximum of 4 A with proper heat dissipation. If necessary, adding additional TIP125s in parallel with base resistors should increase capacitance. This additional pair of components allowed me to maintain the point of contact between the battery and the load. Given the low cost of the controller, my effort was worth it.

Pros
  • Easy Setup
Cons
  • There are other interesting options.
