Review on πŸ“» Sangean ATS-405 FM-Stereo/AM/Short Wave World Band Receiver: Unleashing the Power of Silver by Stephen Hobbs

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Good radio at the end of the SWL era.

I was pleasantly surprised by all the options this compact radio has to offer. Beautiful bright display with multiple backlight options. Easy to read with good font size. I didn't read the manual to learn how to use the radio. I just got the idea from a review before I got the device. The radio works well on AM and FM. SW is good too. I have not compared side by side with other radios on SW. For several nights I had good reception of shortwave stations from the USA, Cuba, Brazil and Australia. I think I'll get more as the distribution improves. ATS-405 is ideal for sleeping. Don't expect DX capability from this device, but it's a decent everyday performance (news, talk show, music). The radio is very loud and clear. I have 2500mA rechargeable batteries for use with the receiver. I use the radio with the AC adapter most of the time. Sangean now supplies the radio with a switching power supply instead of the old transformer power supply. These are FCC requirements. The new power supply has an input voltage of 100-230V, so you can use it anywhere, just don't forget the power supply (1-3$). Thanks to the new type of power supply, I don't hear any background noise. My Comast modem makes more noise than any other electronic device. It would be the best compact HF radio on the market if it had an external antenna connection and an SSB option.
