The radio does not recognize the presence of batteries - alkaline or nickel metal hydride - and therefore does not work without AC power. I received this radio a few days ago and I really like it so far. My longtime travel radio died on the trip and after looking around a bit I decided to give it a try. I almost bought the CC Skywave but a friend I was staying with at the time of purchase just bought it and seeing the problems he returned it and I got 405th size.
