What to look for when choosing this perch

Bought this perch 2 months ago with no problems. I checked at least two review sites, made sure I checked a few bad reviews and overall this perch seemed good to me. I will try to be as subjective as possible in this review with the reasonable suspicions I have. My parrot (GCC) chews on wood so I bought this perch knowing she would chew on it so I tried to be careful with what I bought. It took her several weeks to discover that she could chew wood, and after doing so she worked for three days to chew through part of the base. During this time she started having weird poops (the urates were brownish red which is usually a sign of internal bleeding) so I immediately sent her to the vet for a diagnosis. After taking an X-ray, they found that her bowels were irritated and enlarged. There is no danger to them, we were sent home for observation. The vet couldn't pinpoint exactly why her gut was irritated and I mentioned that she was chewing on wood, but thinking I'd done my research we both thought that wasn't the case. But that's literally the only thing that's changed in her day-to-day life. Being suspicious I took the perch away from her and within a day of not chewing on wood her poo was back to normal and she no longer had bladder irritation or swelling. What I am trying to convey is that I have reasonable suspicions that this perch is not made entirely of natural wood and that the wood or coating on it may contain an irritant. I've looked at several one star reviews stating others have struggled with wood residue and with that in mind you should be aware that it may not be natural wood and may not be safe for birds that like wood lick / chew. Although it hasn't been proven and it could be a complete fluke, use your own judgment and caution when you have a little beaver like mine.

Pros
  • The bird perch is made of natural wood, the shape of which follows the shape of branches found in nature.
Cons
  • Don't remember
