Exactly the same as Marineland, Fluval or other branded filter media. They are perfect for the FX5. This is a better choice for dirty fish than white filters that clog easily. These blue filters are a coarser mesh. Use two filters in your FX5 at the same time, and when the top one becomes uncleanable and/or falls apart, throw it away and put a new one under the not-so-dirty second pad, which now becomes the top filter.
