Review on πŸ”Š Sony STR-DE975 Surround Sound Receiver: Premium Audio for Ultimate Home Entertainment (Discontinued Model) by Paula Baker

Revainrating 3 out of 5

good first few months after purchase

I bought this receiver in February 2002 when I found that my other receiver (also Sony) no longer worked in Dolby Digital optical mode. I liked that this model offers much more power per channel (110X5) and also decodes the DTS signal. Sony products also offer a lot more customization for the money. It has nearly thirty EQ settings and a cool on-screen programming feature. Maybe I was just looking up the manufacturer's name because most of my other electronic products are Sony and I didn't want all those different remotes cluttering up my coffee table, but I also think I'll be spending over $400-$500 on something it is better to do many things. This model initially did just that. The included learning remote allowed me to combine 6 other remotes into one, albeit a large one. After a few months, when I had to keep the volume below 20 to keep my neighbors from hating me (one of the great perks of apartment living), the receiver seemed to lose performance dramatically. Sent back, presumably "fixed", but with the same result. While owning this receiver I have sent it back 4 times. All with disappointing results. When I currently play DVDs, the volume is pathetic. It almost sounds like the model is in MUTE mode. I plan to call Sony Tech and hopefully get a reliable fix on this issue. If I receive it back in a different condition than when I bought it, that will be the last time I deal with a Sony product.

Pros
  • Not cheap but decent
Cons
