Washed in warm water before use and dried at low temperature, it did not shrink or pill. Our mattress is 6 inches deep and there is plenty of room for a deeper mattress by simply tucking the excess underneath. The upper is like terry cloth and I'm sure it will be waterproof. No complaints here other than reviews, separates the mattress topper from the sheets which are purchased separately!
