Was it old paint?
I knew this paint would be thick but it wasn't. Difficult to use. I added water as suggested. I had to keep refilling water. What a mess it was. I ordered the 2 bottle. This second bottle was completely different. Easy to use. Water for dilution is not required. Chalk paint is expensive. I hated that I lost money on the first product. I ended up using all but a quarter of the first bottle. 2nd bottle maybe a cup.
